First of all, we have to look at the difference between prescription drugs and over the counter drugs. They are both made in a laboratory, 25% derived from plants but the other 75% come from chemicals and other man made ingredients. Experts say there is danger in relying on over the counter drugs because they could mask the real problem, or cover up an important symptom, that your doctor should be made aware of. There is also the chance of becoming addicted to even the simplest drug, such as Aspirin or Tums, for instance. Prescription drugs should be regulated by your doctor.
Herbal remedies and food supplements are not as fiercely regulated by the Food and Drug Administration as prescription and over the counter drugs are, and this seems to be a concern for some experts. For the most part, herbal remedies are made from plants, and scientists point out that some of the herbs used can be dangerous to our health, if not taken carefully.
The biggest difference between pharmaceuticals and herbal remedies is that the pharmaceuticals treat you after the illness or disease has already taken over your body, whereas the herbs treat the cause not the effect.
As previously stated, there seems to be no clear cut answer to this on going argument. However, if you feel that taking herbal remedies helps you, and you take them by direction, you shouldn’t encounter any problems. However, a word to the wise: discuss all medications you take with your family doctor.
And remember to drink plenty of pure, distilled, water!
