Benefits of Distilled WaterWater is essential for life. Without food, the human body will live for anywhere from several days to several weeks. Without sleep, people will live for several days. However, after being without water for only a few hours, you'll feel the effects, and you'll only survive for a few days at the most without it. The benefits of drinking water are innumerable. In arid places, water is a valuable commodity, and even in places where water is plentiful, it is often not suitable for human consumption. There are many ways to purify water. It can be run through a filter, gathered high in the mountains away from contaminants or distilled. Distillation is the process of turning water from a liquid to a vapor and back to a liquid, and results in water with zero contaminants. Pure rainwater is very closely naturally distilled. It would seem that the benefits of distilled water would only be offset by its relatively high cost, but distilled water actually has mixed reviews among health experts. Distilled water is completely pure, so a strong argument could be made that it is the best thing for the body. Since it's so pure, it readily dissolves solutes faster than tap water. One of the benefits of distilled water is its alleged ability to draw toxins from the body. While this is a logical assumption, more likely it will reduce the body's absorption of electrolytes. Because of the lack of dissolved solutes in distilled water, it tends to absorb chemicals more readily than water purified by other means. Although it is supposed to be 100% pure, distilled water often contains high levels of carbon dioxide dissolved from the air. This makes it more acidic than regular water. Due to these concerns, the benefits of distilled water are mixed. And remember to drink plenty of pure water! |
